Selenium Superstars Brazil nuts are famous for their exceptionally high selenium content. Just one nut can provide more than the daily recommended amount of this essential mineral! Selenium plays a vital role in supporting immune function and thyroid health, and it boasts impressive antioxidant properties that help protect your body from oxidative stress. by Ashleigh Maher on Sep 02 2024
Coconut Sugar vs. Maple Syrup Its 2024, we all know refined sugar isn’t good for us but we all still crave something a little sweet right? Enter coconut sugar and maple syrup! Both boast unique flavours and nutritional profiles but which is better in terms of nutrition and taste? Let’s check out it out below. Coconut Sugar: Nature's Sweet Crystals Coconut sugar, derived from the sap of coconut palm trees, undergoes minimal processing, retaining more nutrients than refined sugars. Here’s why it stands out: Nutritional Richness: Unlike refined sugars that offer empty calories, coconut sugar contains small amounts of essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, calcium, and potassium. These minerals contribute to overall health and well-being. Lower Glycaemic Index: One of the significant advantages of coconut sugar is its lower glycaemic index (GI) compared to regular sugar. This means it causes a slower rise in blood glucose levels, making it a preferable option for those monitoring their blood sugar levels. Distinct Flavour Profile: Coconut sugar has a subtle caramel-like flavour with a hint of coconut, adding depth to baked goods, beverages, and savoury dishes alike. Environmental Sustainability: The cultivation of coconut palm trees is generally considered more sustainable than other crops, requiring less water and chemical inputs. Maple Syrup: Liquid Gold Maple syrup, made from the sap of maple trees, is renowned for its unique taste and nutrient content. Here are the benefits that set it apart: Rich in Antioxidants: Maple syrup contains various antioxidants, such as polyphenols, which help neutralise free radicals in the body and contribute to overall health. Vitamins and Minerals: It’s a source of essential nutrients like manganese, zinc, and riboflavin, providing small but significant amounts of these vital nutrients. Natural Sweetness: Maple syrup’s distinct sweet flavour makes it a versatile sweetener for pancakes, waffles, and even savoury dishes like glazed meats and roasted vegetables. Sustainable Harvesting: While more labour-intensive than coconut sugar production, maple syrup production is also sustainable, with modern techniques aiming to minimise environmental impact. Choosing the Right Sweetener When it comes to selecting between coconut sugar and maple syrup, personal preference often plays a crucial role. However, considering their nutritional benefits can guide your choice: For Lower Glycaemic Impact: opt for coconut sugar, especially if you’re managing blood sugar levels or prefer a subtle caramel flavour in your recipes. For Antioxidants and Unique Flavour: Maple syrup offers a rich, distinctive taste alongside antioxidant benefits, making it a delightful addition to breakfasts and a range of culinary creations. Bottom line? Whichever you choose, both natural sweeteners offer nutritional advantages over refined sugars. Integrating them into your allows you to indulge in sweetness while making informed choices for your health. Embrace the variety nature provides and enjoy the journey of discovering new flavours!

The Health Benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil vs. Olive Oil: What You Need to Know

by Jason McGinn on Aug 20 2024
What’s the Difference? When it comes to cooking and healthy eating, olive oil is often hailed as a heart-healthy choice. However, not all olive oils are created equal. The terms "extra virgin olive oil" and "olive oil" can be confusing, and understanding their differences can help you make better choices for your health. Let’s delve into the health benefits of each and see why extra virgin olive oil stands out. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO): Production: EVOO is made from pure, cold-pressed olives without the use of heat or chemicals. This method preserves more of the olive’s natural flavours and nutrients. Quality: It is the highest quality olive oil available and is less processed than regular olive oil. EVOO has stringent standards for purity, taste, and acidity. Taste: It typically has a more robust flavour, with a range of fruity, nutty, or peppery notes depending on the olive variety and region. Olive Oil: What to look out for: Production: Often labelled simply as "olive oil," this is usually a blend of refined olive oil and a small amount of EVOO. The refining process involves heat and chemicals, which can strip away some of the oil’s natural nutrients and flavours. Quality: It is less expensive and has a higher smoke point than EVOO due to the refining process, making it more suitable for high-heat cooking. Taste: It has a milder flavour compared to EVOO and is less likely to impart strong tastes to dishes. Health Benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil Rich in Antioxidants: EVOO is packed with antioxidants, such as polyphenols, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. These antioxidants play a role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases and promoting overall health. High in Healthy Fats: It is an excellent source of monounsaturated fats, which are known to support heart health by improving cholesterol levels. These fats can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase HDL (good) cholesterol. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The polyphenols and oleocanthal in EVOO have anti-inflammatory effects that can help reduce the risk of inflammation-related diseases, such as arthritis and cardiovascular conditions. Supports Digestive Health: EVOO has been shown to promote a healthy digestive system. Its natural compounds can help protect the lining of the digestive tract and may even aid in the prevention of certain digestive disorders. May Aid Weight Management: Despite its calorie content, EVOO can be beneficial for weight management. Its monounsaturated fats may help regulate appetite and metabolism, making it a useful addition to a balanced diet. Health Benefits of Olive Oil Heart Health: Like EVOO, regular olive oil is also high in monounsaturated fats, which can support heart health by improving cholesterol levels. It still offers some benefits, though they are generally less pronounced due to the refining process. Versatile Cooking Oil: Olive oil's higher smoke point makes it suitable for a variety of cooking methods, including frying and roasting. While it may not have the same level of antioxidants as EVOO, it can still be a healthier alternative to many other cooking oils. Nutrient Content: Olive oil contains some vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin E, though the levels are typically lower than in EVOO. It still provides beneficial fats that can contribute to a balanced diet. So which should you choose? When choosing between extra virgin olive oil and regular olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil is the superior option due to its higher antioxidant content, minimal processing, and more pronounced health benefits. While both types of olive oil offer heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and versatile cooking options, EVOO stands out for its richer nutrient profile and greater potential health benefits. Incorporating extra virgin olive oil into your diet can be a flavourful way to enhance your meals while supporting overall health. Whether drizzled over salads, used as a dip for bread, or added to cooked dishes, EVOO is a tasty and nutritious addition to any meal!

Almonds: Activated vs Natural

by Ashleigh Maher on Jun 26 2024
Activated vs. Natural Almonds Almonds are not only a delicious snack but also a powerhouse of nutrition, offering a range of health benefits. In the past few years activated nuts have grown in popularity. But what exactly does activated mean and are they better for you? Let's delve into the differences between activated and natural almonds to understand their respective benefits. Natural Almonds: A Classic Choice Natural almonds are simply raw almonds that have undergone minimal processing. Here’s what makes them a popular choice: Rich Nutrient Profile: Natural almonds are packed with essential nutrients such as vitamin E, magnesium, and healthy fats. They are a good source of protein and fiber, making them a satisfying and nutritious snack. Antioxidant Power: Almonds naturally contain antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress in the body. These antioxidants contribute to overall health and may have anti-inflammatory properties. Heart Health: The monounsaturated fats in almonds are beneficial for heart health, helping to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels when consumed as part of a balanced diet. Digestive Health: The fibre content in natural almonds supports digestive regularity and promotes a healthy gut environment. Activated Almonds: Unlocking Nutrient Potential Activated almonds have gained popularity for their enhanced digestibility and nutrient absorption. Here’s what sets them apart: Improved Nutrient Availability: Activated almonds undergo a soaking and drying process designed to reduce enzyme inhibitors and phytic acid. These compounds can hinder nutrient absorption in the body. By activating almonds, their nutrient bioavailability increases, allowing for better absorption of vitamins and minerals like calcium and zinc. Easier Digestion: Some people find activated almonds easier to digest compared to natural almonds. The soaking process breaks down enzyme inhibitors that may cause digestive discomfort in some individuals. Nutrient Density: Activated almonds are considered to be more nutrient-dense due to their improved absorption properties. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with digestive sensitivities or those seeking maximum nutritional benefit from each almond. Potential Flavour Profile: Activated almonds have a milder, creamier taste compared to their raw counterparts. Making the Choice: Natural or Activated? When choosing between natural and activated almonds (or nuts of any kind), consider your dietary preferences, nutritional needs, and digestive health: Preference for Raw Foods: If you prefer minimally processed foods and enjoy the natural crunch and flavour of almonds, sticking with natural almonds might be ideal. Digestive Sensitivities: Individuals with digestive issues or sensitivities may benefit from trying activated almonds due to their potentially improved digestibility. Nutrient Absorption: If you are focused on maximising nutrient absorption, particularly for minerals like calcium and zinc, activated almonds might offer an advantage. Ultimately, both natural and activated almonds are nutritious options that can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. Whether you opt for the simplicity of natural almonds or the enhanced digestibility of activated almonds, incorporating almonds into your daily routine can contribute to overall health and well-being.

Honey: The Golden Elixir

by Ashleigh Maher on Jun 22 2024
Honey: The Golden Elixir Cold and Flu season is here! In the world of natural remedies and wholesome foods, few treasures are as universally cherished as honey. Beyond its delightful sweetness, honey boasts a plethora of health benefits that have been revered for centuries. Let’s delve a little into the benefits of consuming honey local to your area. Local Honey and Allergy Relief: Nature's Soothing Balm What exactly distinguishes local honey from its commercial counterparts? It's all about locality. Local honey is harvested from hives situated near your home, typically within a 30 km radius. This proximity ensures that the honey captures the essence of your local environment, the pollen from local plants. For allergy sufferers, local honey holds a particularly sweet promise. The theory behind using local honey for allergies revolves around its trace amounts of pollen. By ingesting small amounts of local pollen through honey, it's believed that you may build up a tolerance to seasonal allergens over time. While research on this front is ongoing, many individuals swear by the relief they experience during allergy seasons by incorporating local honey into their daily routine. A Natural Powerhouse of Nutrients One of the standout features of  honey is its impressive nutritional profile. Packed with antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins (such as B vitamins and vitamin C), and minerals (including calcium, magnesium, and potassium), honey serves as a powerhouse of natural goodness. These nutrients play crucial roles in supporting overall health, from aiding digestion to promoting skin health and beyond. Fun fact: Honey is also the only food that will never spoil! Seriously… look it up. Supporting Immune Health One of the biggest benefits of honey is its potential to support immune function. The antioxidants found in honey help combat oxidative stress in the body, while its antimicrobial properties make it a natural ally against certain bacteria and fungi. Consuming local honey regularly may help strengthen your immune system, making it more resilient against common illnesses. Gut Health and Digestive Wellness The enzymes present in honey support digestion by aiding in the breakdown of carbohydrates and sugars. This can help promote a healthy gut microbiome, which is essential for overall digestive wellness and nutrient absorption. Additionally, honey has been traditionally used to soothe gastrointestinal discomfort, making it a gentle remedy for issues like indigestion or gastritis. Versatility in Culinary Delights Honey adds a touch of natural sweetness and complexity to culinary creations. Whether drizzled over yogurt, mixed into dressings and marinades, or spread on toast, its nuanced flavour enhances both sweet and savoury dishes. Honey's versatility in the kitchen makes it a beloved staple for chefs and home cooks alike! Sustainability and Supporting Local Beekeepers Choosing local honey isn't just about personal health—it's also a choice that supports local ecosystems and beekeepers. By purchasing honey from local apiaries, you contribute to the preservation of bee populations, which are crucial for pollinating crops and maintaining biodiversity. This act of conscientious consumption fosters sustainable agricultural practices and strengthens community ties. The benefits of honey extend far beyond its role as a natural sweetener. From boosting immunity to soothing allergies and enhancing digestive health, local honey emerges as a true hero in the realm of holistic wellness. So, the next time you get the hankering for something sweet reach for that pot of liquid gold!

It can be used as a direct substitute to cornstarch, and given corns bad rap these days with GMO, arrowroot starch has started to see a rise in its fame.  How to Use: arrowroot starch packs a bit more punch than cornstarch, so should be used as two teapsoons of arrowroot powder to every tablespoon of cornstarch.

Back to School: Boosting Kids Brain Power

by Jason McGinn on Jan 27 2019
We can almost here the school bell ring as we're busy organising school supplies, uniforms, cleaning lunchboxes and motivating our kids for another studious and successful school year. Summer was awesome but so is getting back into a routine and stimulating those little brains once again. This return to a new school year also means we have to get our routines back on track and reign back in those healthy habits. With all that learning the kids are about to do, supporting their brain health helps them learn more efficiently and also helps them wind down easier at the end of their busy days. So what can we do to help them along the way?    Here are 5 tips to boosting kids brain power: 1) Diet: this is one is no-brainer (pun intended). Nutrition affects kids brains both short term with concentration and focus, and long term such as brain growth and development. Be sure to start their day (and yours) with a healthy breakfast and include lots of brain-friendly foods in their diet, such as: Nuts & seeds, protein, foods rich in omegas (think chia puddings!), leafy greens, beans & lentils.    2) Sleep: ensure your kids sleep needs are being met. Children 3-10 years: about 10-12 hours a day. 11-12 years: about 10 hours each day.  Teenagers: about 9 hours a day.  Encourage sleep with healthy sleep habits. No screen time at least an hour before bed, reading before bed and aim for an emotional connection before bed to meet their emotional needs as well. Brains function optimally when well rested!   3) Exercise: This one is critical. Its hard to expect children to sleep well when they haven't been able to burn off energy. Furthermore, playing sports, free play, running, hiking and more promote healthy brain development. Exercise is also an excellent stress-reducer, which is very important in little peoples worlds as childhood anxiety becomes more and more common.    4) Mindfulness & Relaxation: kids also feel stress and worries and arguably more so these days than ever before. Just as stress affects our cognition, it affects the little ones too. With a rise in anxiety and suicide in children, their mental wellbeing is extremely important. Not only does practicing mindfulness and relaxation help combat some of these serious issues, it also helps the brain regenerate after a busy day of learning and play. Letting all of that important information absorb.  There are a lot of resources these days including free apps!   5) Stimulating Activities: stimulating games can be fun for the whole family. They can be simple board games, games that encourage logic and problem solving, concentration and memory. Keep it light and fun and make it part of your daily habits!

Anti-Resolutions

by Jason McGinn on Jan 02 2019
Well here we are, welcoming in yet another New Year. Some of us woke up on January 1st, 2019 with a fresh new perspective, new energy, new goals and new resolutions. While I am down for positivity and goal setting, resolutions simply don't work. They most often lead to failure (especially within the first week), which leads us down a path of negativity and repeating the same cycles from year to year.  So what if we re-frame resolutions and make them about what we don't want to do? Take stock of the things you DON'T want to do in the New Year and make them tangible.  Lets run with a few examples here...   New Year Resolution: I will eat healthy 6 out of 7 days a week. Anti-Resolution: I won't have soft drinks / sugar / alcohol 6 out of 7 days a week.    New Year Resolution: I will be more efficient with my time.  Anti-Resolution: I won't mindlessly scroll social media between such and such hours.   New Year Resolution: I will keep my house clean and avoid clutter. Anti-Resolution: I won't go to bed with a sink full of dirty dishes.   These anti-resolutions have a clear action which make them achievable. Keep your anti-resolutions as applicable as you can, celebrate your achievements and strive to be better today than you were yesterday.    HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW YEAR! xoxo

🍸Had a few too many celebratory cocktails last night? If you’re feeling a bit less than perky this morning, blend up this anti-inflammatory tonic to remedy some of the damage from last night.  You only need a few magical ingredients to right some of those wrongs.  1. 4 inch piece of FRESH TUMERIC: Curcumin is the magic maker of turmeric. It’s an extremely powerful anti-inflammatory and turmeric is also loaded with antioxidants.    2. 3 inch piece of FRESH GINGER: ginger helps ease an upset tummy as well as reducing inflammation. Ginger is an important element to an anti-hangover concoction!    3. 2 x FRESH LEMON: Lemons bring Vitamin C, antioxidants, and a healthier digestion to the table. All while giving this tonic some freshness and acidity to cut through some of the earthiness of the tumeric.    Blend these ingredients together with 4 cups of filtered water then knock back a few glasses to bring you back to life. Store the leftovers in a glass jar in the fridge and enjoy for the rest of the week!

12 TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER CHRISTMAS | Naturally Hooked Christmas is in full swing! Its the season for drinking, eating and being Merry. So how do we enjoy ourselves but not compromise all our hard work and healthy habits? We've compiled the top 12 tips with the help of www.becomingness.com.au to help keep you on track this season!   1. Don't make unrealistic weight goals during the festive season. Choose a few days of the season where you'll indulge, but try to stay on track with your regular eating & exercise the rest of the time.   2. Don't skip meals. This is a big no-no. Skipping meals = unhealthy choices later.   3. Eat BEFORE you go to the party! Eat a healthy snack before you hit the party so you don't need to eat as much while you're out.   4. Don't stand near the food table. The further away you are from the food table, the less likely you'll unnecessarily pick at it.   5. Try to make healthier choices when selecting meals. Think vegetables, protein and salad!   6. Pay attention to your portion sizes.   7. Don't feel obligated to eat everything that is served to you.   8. If you're hosting, making sure you include lots of healthy choices for yourself and your guests.   9. Get creative with your cooking. Check out our healthy recipes in the blog!   10. Limit your alcohol intake. You don't have to be the fun police, just be mindful.   11. Bring a dish. If you're host isn't the healthiest of healthy, bring a plate that you'll love to share.   12. And finally, try not to feel too guilty when you do indulge.    Happy Holidays from our family to yours xx
What Are Omegas?

What Are Omegas?

by Jason McGinn on Oct 24 2018
As we become more health conscious, we read about essential nutrients that our body needs to thrive. Sometimes this gets confusing and overwhelming, especially to the newbie. So lets breakdown omegas fatty acids and find out what they're all about.   There are 3 types of Omega fatty acids: 3, 6 & 9. We'll have a look at all three.   What are Omega 3's? Omega 3's are a type of essential fat that your body can't make. They have many different types, but the most common are the following: 1) EPA: these guys are responsible for reducing inflammation and even depression. 2) DHA: they make up 8% of the weight of your brain and are crucial for brain development and functioning. 3) ALA: these guys are responsible for producing energy. Omega 3's have a lot of important jobs including keeping up a healthy heart, managing mental health, decreasing fat in the liver, bone health, infant brain development, preventing dementia & decreasing body weight and waist size.  Where do we find them? Omega 3's are found in salmon, oysters, chia seeds, linseed/flaxseeds, walnuts, soybeans and more.    What are Omega 6's? Omega 6 fatty acids are also essential to the diet and they're primary role is to provide energy. Unlike omega-3's, the western diet often has too much of these guys.  There are two common types of omega-6's that reap health benefits. 1) GLA is an omega found in certain oils. When consumed, these guys have been shown to reduce arthritis. When accompanied with other treatments, GLA supplements have shown to more effectively reduce breast cancer than when treated with a drug alone. 2) CLA is another omega-6 with some health benefits. It has been shown that when consumed properly, CLA helps reduce body weight. Where do we find them? As mentioned above, the western diet often has too much of this omega and is disproportionate to omega-3's. Some of the healthy sources of omega-6 are: Walnuts, hemp seeds, pistachios, linseed/flaxseeds, pepitas and sunflower seeds.   What are Omega 9's? Omega-9 fatty acids are different in that they aren't essential as they body produces them. However, consuming fats higher in omega-9 than other fats can have health benefits. Studies have found that consuming foods higher in omega-9 can reduce the bad cholesterol in those with diabetes. They have also shown to decrease inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity. Where do we find them? Avocadoes and avocado oil, cashews, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, olives and more.

ACTIVATED ALMONDS: Fad or Fact?

by Jason McGinn on Aug 21 2018
It seems every few months a new 'superfood' arrives on the scene. Here, at Naturally Hooked HQ, we believe in keeping healthy eating simple and effective. We also believe in getting bang for your buck. So that leads us to Activated Almonds. Now lets discuss... Firstly, what are Activated Almonds? Activating almonds (and other nuts and seeds for that matter) is the process of where almonds are soaked in filtered or salt water (ours are actually soaked in Kombucha for added gut health benefits) for 12 hours. The almonds are then dehydrated over a low temperature for an extended period of time, usually 12-24 hours. This makes them extremely delicious and nutritious! Why do we Activate Almonds? With normal, inactivated almonds, the enzyme prohibitors prevent your body from absorbing all of the valuable nutrients that it can. And almonds have a lot of nutrients to offer. The activating process actually tricks the almond into sprouting, which activates their protein, fatty acids, nutrients and minerals, and the bad enzyme prohibitors get lost.  Furthermore, eating a lot of raw nuts can actually be irritating to your digestive system. Have you ever seen your nuts come out the other side? Thats because of those pesky enzyme prohibitors.  Is it really worth it? Yes, activated almonds are more expensive than their inactivated friends. In our eyes, its absolutely worth it. In fact, you can consume less activated almonds than raw almonds to get the same, if not more, nutritional value. Less is more! Plus, activated almonds taste better. Even my 2.5 year old eats them by the handful. And thats worth it. Nutritional Profile of Almonds: Vitamin E (the brain food), calcium & phosphorus Iron, magnesium & zinc Selenium, copper & niacin  High amounts of protein & low in carbohydrates
